Vauxhall Astra club estate mk4 1.6 Petrol/LPG
I have had it since February this year and car has never let me down, it did have a little issue of cutting out when slowing down which turned out to be the crank sensor so new one is now fitted. Astra is a very good starter first turn of key everything time, it really does drive nice for a car thats 19yrs old, reasonable mileage for age. It has part service history upto 18000 and other paperwork and a good MOT history, can be checked on Gov site. As you can see its in very good condition for the year.
Ive listed the colour as silver although the proper Vauxhall colour is blue. You can see the blue tint and I think its better than the standard star silver. This has been converted to LPG after leaving the factory and is very cheap to run. LPG at roughly half the cost of petrol means slightly more than 50% of the running costs.
The pervious owner had car just over 3 years and he done less than 10000 miles. In that time its had a new clutch, timing belt, dis pack, HT leads, spark plugs, egr valve, thermostat, rear springs, exhaust (all except cat), rear wheel bearing, and front brake discs and pads. The LPG has also been serviced. The second owner used it for commuting and had it converted to LPG. The filler cap is on the rear off side bumper.
He worked in a motor workshop and had the LPG filler cap, door sills, bump strips and door handles professionally resprayed in matching factory colour, as per the photos. The b posts and rear doors have also had black vinyl applied and the rear windows have been lightly tinted. All this makes the car look better and newer. Astra will be nice and clean inside before collection.
It also has a tow bar and MOT which expires on 10/12/2019. I have 2 sets of keys with remote locking.
I have the log book in my name, its only had 3 owners before me. Ive also got the car pass. The standard CD player malfunctioned so head unit is fitted with aux in, SD card and USB inputs. The LPG can be turned off. Cant think of anything else to say about it.
Took it for a run the other day and have noticed the rear shocks could do with replacing. Occasionally after starting it cuts out. It then restarts again and is fine. There is a light on the dash but it passed the MOT fine with it. Although its in very good condition in and out, close inspection will reveal the odd imperfection commensurate with age. The only thing worth mentioning is light crumpling to the o/s/r door and a few scuffs to the wheel arch. Also, the LPG tank is a toroidal shape one, is 50 litres, and is in the spare wheel well. This means the spare tyre and jack etc is in the boot, but the load cover hides them. After a few questions I thought Id write a little about the LPG; Im not an expert but possess basic knowledge. The tank is 50 litres. As it is pressurised, it is a sealed system. LPG flows to the engine due to it being pressurised, not by pump like petrol. The less LPG there is, the less pressure, down to a point where it stops. This is about 85% of the volume of the tank, although it should be turned off before then. So when the tank is empty, there will still be about 7 litres in. Because LPG is a gas under pressure, it is difficult to gauge how much is in the tank, without very expensive and complicated gauges, which defeats the purpose of economy.
The gauge therefore is a rough guide at best (the same as any lpg gauge). LPG expands as it flows to the engine, and therefore cools (just like a deodorant can). Ordinarily it would freeze and not work.
To counter this, it runs through a vaporiser. This is plumbed into the coolant system. When the car starts from cold, the coolant heats up the vaporiser to a set temperature, the LPG then engages. The car always starts on petrol, even if it is up to temperature - in which case it will flick to LPG shortly afterwards. The only noticeable difference when running on LPG is a slightly increased rattle from the injectors - this is normal (theyre solenoids after all), and you can only hear it when stationary and if youre hearing is spot on. You actually get less MPG from LPG than petrol, thats because of the lower calorific value in LPG compared to petrol.
Its only cheaper because its cheaper! The proper way to compare fuels is pence per mile.
Driving around town I was getting around 33mpg on petrol and 30 mpg on gas - around 10% less. For all the reasons mentioned, and all other variables, it would not be possible to say with certainty how many miles youll get from a tank etc etc.
However 250 would easily be achieved. Also Ive noticed when on lpg, the efficiency does not increase like it would with petrol when doing long steady state journeys, like on a motorway. If you get 30 mpg around town, you dont get much more on the motorway - one reason to compare pence per mile not mpg. LPG burns hotter than petrol. It therefore needs a more powerful spark to ignite the mixture.
This puts more load on the ignition system which is why I replaced the dis pack, leads and plugs when I bought it. Im also supplying spare plugs but the ones that are in are fine. LPG burns cleaner than petrol, so the engine oil stays cleaner for longer. Cash on collection and car to be collected within 5 days of sell. And car will be advertised elsewhere.
